The boxing calendar in 2018 was no less than impressive, and we were treated to a number of great fights culminating in a heavyweight showdown between Wilder and Fury which saw both fighters settle for a draw decision on points.

With 2019 now upon us and boxing more popular than ever with a number of high profile fighters fans love to watch, let’s take a look at some of the potential fights on the calendar.

Deontay Wilder v Tyson Fury Rematch

This is a fight that will unravel many key fights in 2019 depending on the outcome.

Both fighters before their first epic battle had one eye on Anthony Joshua, although as it turned out their fight proved to be of greater interest and popularity. Many are now more interested to see a rematch between these two heavyweight greats than to see either fight Anthony Joshua.

The initial perception is that Wilder v Joshua would be the bigger fight, although the People’s Champion Fury is one of the biggest threats to any title holder and narrowly missed out on causing an upset in the Wilder fight. Had he stayed on his feet in the last round their is a strong likelihood that he would have taken the title.

Whilst this trio of magnificent fighters is an exciting conversation point, we can’t write off Oleksandr Usyk from this. The impressive Ukrainian undefeated fighter KO’d Tony Bellew in November 2018, and with Bellew now retired, a rematch of that one is unlikely and a rematch clause reportedly wasn’t part of the initial fight conditions.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin III

These fight’s never fail to deliver, and triple G will be looking to finally get that win over Alvarez having drawn the first encounter and lost the second by way of majority decision.

Triple G has not fought again since the loss, yet Alvarez went on to defeat Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden three months later in December last year by TKO.

Some might say that this saga is now somewhat played out, although when you look back at the thrilling fights in both encounters, it’s hard to rival them with others in 2018.

James DeGale v Chris Eubank Jr

James DeGale, former two-time Super-middleweight champion has called out Chris Eubank Jr on several occasions now and a provisional date has been set for 23rd February 2019 at the O2 Arena in London. DeGale has been very outspoken ahead of this match up saying that he is going ‘to retire Eubank Jr’.

Eubank Jr has suffered two losses in his professional career, both at the hands of Brits. The first coming to Billy Joe Saunders by SD in November 2014, and to George Groves in February 2018. He’s only fought once since falling to Groves in September 2018 where he achieved a win by RTD over JJ McDonagh of Ireland.
