BoxingBoxing PreviewJake Paul v Tommy Fury

The fight that has divided opinions of boxing fans and professionals alike. The speculation of will it or won’t it happen… well the fight is going ahead, and it is taking place this weekend having originally been scheduled to go ahead on 18th December 2021. Check out our preview and how we see the match going below.

Jake Paul

If ever there was a greater incentive for Jake Paul to beat Tommy Fury it is this, a place in the boxing world rankings; and after facing just one professional boxer. On the table is a position in the WBC’s global rankings for cruiserweight, provided he defeats Tommy Fury, the younger sibling of WBC heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury. This decision comes as a shock, considering that Paul has only claimed victories against other social media influencers, a basketball player, and mixed martial artists in his boxing career.

In August of 2018, Jake Paul launched his boxing journey by triumphing over Deji Olatunji, a British YouTuber, in an amateur bout by way of technical knockout in the fifth round. He then advanced to professional status and achieved victory over AnEsonGib, another YouTuber, in January of 2020, with a first-round TKO. Subsequently, between 2020 and 2022, Paul secured wins against retired basketball player Nate Robinson with a second-round knockout, as well as retired mixed martial artists Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, with a first-round TKO, two split decisions, and a sixth-round knockout, respectively.

Tommy Fury

Tommy Fury commenced his professional boxing career on 22 December 2018, at the Manchester Arena, Manchester, in a four-round points decision (PTS) win (40-36) against Jevgenijs Andrejevs, who had a record of 10-102-3. The event occurred as part of the undercard for the Josh Warrington vs. Carl Frampton featherweight world title fight. Fury achieved his first knockout (KO) victory in his second fight, triumphing over Callum Ide (0-26-2) in the first round on 23 March 2019.

Following a nine-month hiatus from the sport to participate in a reality television show, Fury returned to boxing on 21 December 2019, at the Copper Box Arena in London, where he secured a first-round technical knockout (TKO) win over Przemyslaw Binienda (2-26). The bout was broadcasted live on BT Sport.

On 13 November 2020, Fury attained his fourth consecutive win in a match against Genadij Krajevskij (0-12). Though the boxers exchanged shots in the opening round, Fury started to land significant blows in the second, ultimately leading to his opponent’s knockout with a massive uppercut. Fury’s record grew to 6-0 after he garnered a points victory over Jordan Grant on 5 June 2021.

Making his debut in the United States on the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley undercard on 29 August 2021, Fury claimed a unanimous decision win against Anthony Taylor (0-1) with all three judges scoring the fight 40-36.

TWV Sport Team Thoughts

There has been a lot of talk from both fighters, and much speculation from the wider respective fan bases ahead of this fight. Regardless of what both fighters say themselves, they both have an enormous amount to lose, especially if either fighter wants to progress with a professional boxing career at the highest level.

With the above in mind we feel that there is a high risk of both fighters cancelling each other out due to being at a similar level of ability. Not only that, but after all the hype and chat, and controversial involvement from the WBO, a draw could even suit both fighters. Naturally that’s not what we want to happen, but could be feasible, and would largely depend on how good the judges are and if the last couple of years are anything to go by there have been some shocking judging decisions in boxing.
