English Premier League on the verge of a mass exodus of free agents

The English Premier League and its clubs are facing a large number of players finishing their contracts in June 2020. It was recently reported that over 100 Premier League players are set to leave their current clubs on a free transfer next year.

It isn’t just your average journeyman footballer that will be out of contract in June. Rather, some of the league’s biggest names will be available. Their availability means they can join top clubs without a transfer fee being paid. So, which top Premier League players will lead a mass exodus of free agents from the Premier League?

David De Gea – Manchester United

In July, it was reported Manchester United were on the verge of making goalkeeper David De Gea the most well-paid shot-stopper in the world. The Red Devils are ready to hand out a massive £350,000-a-week salary to De Gea.

The goalkeeper is yet to sign the new deal that was put on the table. If the club doesn’t get him to put his name down by January, he will be able to negotiate with a team abroad. The likes of Barcelona or Juventus could come calling for De Gea.

Joel Matip – Liverpool

Champions League winning centre-back Joel Matip is a brilliant complement to teammate Virgil van Dijk. The duo is the backbone of Liverpool’s defence but it isn’t just his defending that makes Matip a top star. He is a deadly target on set pieces.

The centre-back, who joined Liverpool from Schalke on free transfer, is now worth a whopping £27 million according to transfermarkt.co.uk. If he leaves Liverpool, he will be a highly desired player.

David Silva – Manchester City

David Silva may be 33-years old, but he can still play at the highest level. The Manchester City central midfielder has been an integral part of the squad since arriving from Valencia in 2010. During his nearly a decade with the Cityzens, he has won everything, except the Champions League.

Silva’s legacy at Manchester City will be similar to that of Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, and Sergio Aguero. He helped turn the club into a world-class team. Silva has previously said his current contract at the Etihad will most likely be his last with the club.

Olivier Giroud – Chelsea

Olivier Giroud is the most underrated striker in the Premier League. In seven seasons in England with Arsenal and Chelsea combined, Giroud has scored double-digit goals in all competitions.

Giroud’s days at Chelsea are most likely numbered. He is 32 and despite leading Chelsea to the Europa League trophy last term with 11 European goals, he will head for pastures new.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – Chelsea

By the time you read this, Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi could have signed his new contract at the club. The teenage sensation only joined the first team in 2018 and suffered a season ending Achilles injury at the end of the season.

He will be back in action soon, but will he sign his new contract? Hudson-Odoi will be available to play after the upcoming international break. Bayern Munich are interested in signing him, but Hudson-Odoi looks likely to be a free agent who re-signs.
