Premier League Preview – Matchday 25 of 38

Wednesday night brings us a treat of two midweek Premier League fixtures, rescheduled from earlier in the season. Manchester United play host to Brentford, and Newcastle United make the long journey south to face West Ham United.

West Ham United v Newcastle United – Wednesday 5th April 2023 – 20:00 BST

The pressure on teams chasing points can intensify when playing in one of the later Premier League games. This was particularly felt by West Ham United, who slipped into second bottom of the table on a day when they were not playing. However, the team responded positively on Sunday, earning a crucial three points against a direct relegation rival in front of their home fans.

Despite the victory, West Ham United currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League table. Furthermore, five clubs below them will be playing before West Ham United on Wednesday, which could alter the League standings significantly by the time West Ham United kick off at the London Stadium. The team has a 6-3-5 record in the top flight at home and will be seeking another big result there.

After suffering a 4-0 defeat at Brighton, West Ham United has bounced back to win three of their last four games across all competitions. Their unbeaten record of 11 points from 15 at home in the League has been instrumental in keeping them ticking along.

Gianluca Scamacca may not be available for selection, but it is hoped that he will be fit for the upcoming weekend.

Newcastle United recently experienced a dip in form, causing them to lose some ground on the top four as Eddie Howe aims to lead the club to Champions League qualification. However, their performances have improved significantly, and late goals have helped Newcastle United reclaim a spot in the Champions League positions. They now hope to build on their crucial victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

This win propelled Newcastle United above Manchester United in the table, and they are determined to maintain their momentum as they prepare for two quick away games in London. First up is a trip to the East End, where they will strive to improve their 5-6-2 away record and keep Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at bay.

Newcastle United has won three consecutive Premier League games, scoring at least two goals in each of their victories against Wolves, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United. Prior to the March international break, they had failed to win any of their last four away Premier League games before securing a late penalty and deservedly claiming three points at the City Ground.

Joe Willock scored the opening goal against Manchester United but picked up an injury and is uncertain for the upcoming fixtures. Callum Wilson, who came on as a substitute and scored the second goal, will be vying for a starting position.

Although Newcastle United’s performances have significantly improved over the past month, visiting this ground will be tough. After losing three home league games in a row, West Ham United have only conceded two goals in their last five games at the London Stadium, albeit with some favorable fixtures.

Nonetheless, West Ham United has performed well at home, and their ability to contain Newcastle United was demonstrated in their 1-1 draw at St James’ Park in early February, where they fought back for a point. As both the relegation race and top four race are affected, I believe that The Hammers will be able to slow down Newcastle United’s momentum on Wednesday evening.

Although Newcastle United has had a relatively decent record here in recent years, West Ham United put an end to their two-game losing streak in last season’s 1-1 draw. They have the ability to do the same and secure at least one more point in what promises to be a crucial game where the first goal could be a significant factor.
