Dame Laura Davies considers two major wins in 2023 to be a typical performance for world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, as stated to Sky Sports Golf.
Rory McIlroy started 2023 with a win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, where he beat Patrick Reed by one stroke. McIlroy secured the victory with a birdie on the final hole, earning his third title at the event after wins in 2009 and 2015.
In 2022, McIlroy placed in the top 10 in all four majors, with a second-place finish at the Masters being his best result. Dame Laura Davies expects McIlroy to end his 9-year winless streak in major tournaments in 2023.
Davies commented on Monday after McIlroy’s win in the UAE, saying: “Rory said in an interview that everyone seems to decide how good a year he has had by how many majors he wins.
“He could have won all four last year but it didn’t quite happen. If he wins two this year, I think that would be par. I think he is good enough to do that. If he wins more than that, it will be sensational.
“It is hard to win majors, we all know that, but this guy is good enough to do at least two.”
The final round at Dubai was a back-and-forth battle between McIlroy and LIV Golf member Patrick Reed, which was postponed to Monday due to weather.
