Premier League Preview – Matchday 7 of 38

Two midweek Premier League fixtures see’s two rescheduled games from earlier in the season. Manchester United play host to Brentford, and Newcastle United make the long journey south to face West Ham United.

Manchester United v Brentford – Wednesday 5th April 2023 – 20:00 BST

Manchester United, who were once considered a long shot to compete for the Premier League title, are currently ranked 4th in the standings and holding onto the last Champions League spot. Although their recent defeat at St James’ Park demonstrates their inconsistency away from Old Trafford, they have a strong record of 9 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss at home.

The team has won 7 of their last 10 matches in various competitions, but the majority of these victories were in Cup ties. Unfortunately, they have been unable to secure a win in their last 3 Premier League games and have failed to score in fixtures against Liverpool, Southampton, and Newcastle United. However, they have won 6 of their last 7 matches at Old Trafford in all competitions, with the exception being a goalless draw against Southampton, during which they played with ten men for almost an hour.

Casemiro is still serving a domestic suspension for two more games, but Christian Eriksen may be included in Saturday’s match. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is hoping to recover from an illness, and the manager may opt to bring in players such as Jadon Sancho and Fred to rejuvenate the team.

Brentford’s recent performance in the Premier League has been mixed, with only one victory in their last four games, including a draw against Brighton where they conceded a late penalty. However, this result also means that they have only lost one of their last 16 league matches. In their last five away league games, they have drawn three matches. After their 1-0 loss to Everton, Brentford responded with a victory over Southampton before drawing at the Amex Stadium.

Shandon Baptiste is now available to play after serving a suspension. Unfortunately, Kristoffer Ajer and Vitaly Janelt will not be able to play due to injury.

Manchester United will benefit from playing at Old Trafford, although the absence of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen is still a concern for the team. Despite this, Erik ten Hag is not interested in making excuses, and the demanding home support will expect a better performance after Sunday’s disappointment.

Hosting Brentford will be a significant challenge for Manchester United, as Brentford have only lost one of their last 16 Premier League games. Thomas Frank’s team is well-organized and capable of creating problems, having already won at Manchester City and drawn at Arsenal this season.

Although Brentford’s recent results demand respect, they were also put under pressure during their 3-3 draw with Brighton this past weekend, raising concerns about their defensive performance. Nonetheless, Manchester United have improved significantly since their 4-0 defeat to Brentford in August.

Old Trafford has been a successful venue for Manchester United, and I believe they can do enough in the attacking third to defeat Brentford. While it wouldn’t be surprising if Brentford also puts up a strong showing, I anticipate a positive reaction from the home team, and a Manchester United victory with at least two goals.
